EastEnders topped the Thursday evening soaps ratings for the eighth consecutive week, according to overnight ratings. The Walford soap’s third episode of the week, which saw Max and Jean visit the mortuary to identify what they presumed to be Stacey’s body, drew 8.98m (39.9%) from 8pm. BBC Three’s repeat added a further 786k (4.1%) at 10pm. Coronation Street’s latest outing, which saw Norris catch Audrey and Lewis sharing a kiss, put in 8.34m (34.2%) at 8.30pm. Both EastEnders and Corrie put in their best Thursday performances since March 4. Meanwhile, Emmerdale’s double bill – during which Aaron began to panic about his secret being revealed, before beating Paddy to a pulp – logged 7.46m (35.3%) and 7.92m (33.6%) at 7pm and 8pm. The episodes delivered the soap’s best Thursday numbers since February 25. BBC One’s episode of Doctors, yesterday titled ‘Risky Business’, interested 1.78m (24.4%) from 1.45pm, before its five-minute 10th anniversary show Decade of Doctors had 1.69m (24.1%) at 2.15pm. Five’s Australian hour kicked off at 5.30pm with 1.54m (10%) tuning in for Neighbours, while 1.01m (5.6%) caught Home and Away half an hour later. Viacom and Google, raising a slow-brewing corporate drama to the boiling point, swapped blistering accusations of piracy and clandestine actions as part of a high-stakes legal war aimed at redrawing how television programs and movies are watched on the Internet.

The claims, contained in previously undisclosed documents unsealed Thursday in Viacom’s $1 billion copyright-infringement lawsuit against YouTube, shed a glaring light on the tactics each media giant allegedly employed as they sought to exploit for their own purposes the Web’s most popular video site.

Viacom, which owns a host of cable channels including Cartoon Network and MTV, sued YouTube in March 2007 for hosting videos of Viacom’s TV shows, such as episodes of “South Park.”

In the court documents, the media conglomerate alleged YouTube founders made a “deliberate decision to build a business based on piracy.”

YouTube, which was acquired by Google in November 2006 for $1.8 billion, maintained that Viacom’s own marketing staff had uploaded many of the videos to YouTube in an effort to promote Viacom-produced shows. It also accused Viacom of acting on a case of sour grapes, because the media company had tried and failed to buy YouTube.

Viacom’s lawsuit, being tried in the U.S. District Court in New York, strikes at the heart of Hollywood’s trepidation about the Internet, where, many fear, the widespread availability of unauthorized video content will undermine television and movies the same way music and newspapers were ravaged by piracy and free offerings.

Earlier this month one of Viacom’s cable networks, Comedy Central, pulled “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report” from the free video site Hulu, worried that it was undercutting cable-TV operators who pay to carry the network.

Among the bolder allegations from the court documents is Viacom’s accusation that one of YouTube’s founders, Jawed Karim, had posted “stolen videos” auckland flights on YouTube in 2005. In an e-mail …continue reading

IN THAILAND politics has long been about compromise rather than conviction. Political parties run on expediency, not ideology, which makes it possible to cobble together all manner of oddball coalitions. But in recent years pragmatism has given way to more rigid loyalties. Rival camps rally their base with fiery talk of an all-out struggle for the nation’s soul, all the while tugging relentlessly at its seams.

Might compromise yet make a comeback? Some scented a whiff of detente on February 26th, when the Supreme Court ruled on the family fortune of the former prime minister, Thaksin Shinawatra. But that still seems wishful thinking. The nine judges found Mr Thaksin guilty of abusing his powers while in office to favour Shin Corp, his family-owned telecoms group, which was sold in January 2006 to Temasek, a Singaporean sovereign-wealth fund. The court decided to seize $1.4 billion of the $2.3 billion in proceeds from that sale, which had been frozen after the army deposed Mr Thaksin in September 2006.

In theory that leaves a tidy sum for Mr Thaksin to live it up in self-exile in Dubai. The remaining $900m represents the value of the family’s stake in Shin Corp before Mr Thaksin became prime minister in 2001. But that money is unlikely to be returned soon, if at all. A large tax bill has to be paid. The court’s verdict exposes Mr Thaksin and his family to a range of civil and criminal charges. Prosecutors may go after members of his cabinet and officials accused of helping Shin Corp. The government can also try to claw back lost revenue from Shin Corp, and particularly its lucrative mobile-phone unit, AIS.

Mr Thaksin lost no time in attacking the verdict and urging his red-shirt supporters to seek justice. Political life is “really tough”, he moaned. A mass rally in Bangkok is planned on cheap flights from Launceston to Melbourne (Tullamarine) March 14th, with the aim of unseating …continue reading

She’s always been gracious to her fans, and last night (February 18) Amy Smart came upon a furry friend while out in Beverly Hills.

The “Butterfly Effect” babe looked lovely as she greeted a friendly dog while walking on Robertson Boulevard, sporting a black jacket/black trousers combo.

In related news, Amy has landed her fourth pilot lead role in the past five years, this time in an untitled CBS medical drama about a mobile team that travels the country helping others.

Amy will play a tough nurse who stands up to the pushy doctors on her team, and even ends up hooking up with one of them.  Saucy!
